Are Indians cricket-crazy or are the Indian cricketers crazy? In the last decade, many cricketing greats from other countries like Shane Warne, Jacques Kallis and Kevin Pietersen have called India a cricket-crazy country. There’s no doubt about it. Just as Germany and Spain are football-crazy, Indians are mad about cricket.
Ups and downs
But being cricket-crazy does not only mean appreciating Indian cricket. It has a fair share of criticism also. When you fail at one stage, the past glory gets forgotten immediately. When the Indians got white-washed 4-0 in England and Australia, the fact that they won the World Cup just last year gets forgotten. The critics are already calling for the phasing out of the three masters — Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar — the veterans who brought India to the no.1 test ranking recently.
So the question is why do these people have to play for a thankless nation, where the people do not respect age and experience and only look at the present statistics? Why play for a nation where the fans will raise you to dizzying heights and bring you down to dark depths in no time at all?I can only conclude that surely the Indian cricketers are crazy for playing cricket for a country that has no faith in its players!
