Summer? So what?
TIPS Fight the sun’s effect on your hair this summer with expert advice from hair guru Jawed Habib. MADHUMITHA SRINIVASAN
Summer’s here and it’s unrelenting. One of the first victims of the heat is our hair; dryness, breakage and dullness are common causes of woes. Here’s where the expert steps in. Hair expert Jawed Habib, who launched the first exclusive salon in Chennai, counsels you on how to keep that mane manageable and wonderful despite the scorching heat.
How does the summer heat affect our hair?
It can prove to be extremely harsh for the hair. The heat steals all the moisture and nutrients out from hair making them dull and brittle. Hence, it’s essential to use some hair protecting cream like hair serum which can prevent the dullness and at the same time keeping the moisture content intact.
Why and how should the hair care regime be different from that of winter or other seasons?
During summers, because of intense heat in the air, hair looks lifeless while in winters, we experience dandruff due to dryness. In Chennai specially, due to the humid climate and presence of sea, there is lot of salt content in the air making hair look dull and flat. And if not washed every day, it may result in dandruff or even hair fall and greying. So if you are looking for healthy hair, the trick is to keep it “fall free” by shampooing every day with any normal shampoo.
What is the one common mistake that men and women commit regarding hair care in summer?
The common blunder I have seen/hear people (men and women alike) commit is not shampooing regularly. They have this fear that due to umpteen chemicals present in hair products, shampooing everyday would lead to hair fall. It’s a myth! The cleaner your hair, the healthier it will remain.
Is oiling one’s hair an important part to having a healthy hair?
Oiling is more like moisturising for the hair. In India, where massage plays a vital role, oil acts as a lubricant to make the massage movement easier. This is only a psychologically feel good factor. While the choice of oil is completely one’s preference. But in reality, it is not for the health of your hair. Instead, I would suggest keeping hair clean as much as possible to evade hair problems.
Short/long, wavy/straight, red/ blonde…what’s in this season?
Medium length, semi wavy hair with some fringes is the best for summers. If you are experimental then opt for a base of khaki gold hair colour for the perfect look! Summer styling can be best portrayed with lots of layers in the hair do. They add to the bounce of your hair.
How can one test the health of one’s hair at home?
It’s simple! Shine and bounce of hair is the apt way to test health of your hair.Your favourite hair spa treatment that can be done at home…Any oil at home with steam towels.
