Walking into Vulture Creek, the newest fashion destination in town, last week, I almost mistook it for a fashion show’s backstage. Models all over the place — a few getting their make-up done, a few getting their photos clicked by Kunal Daswani and a few awaiting their turn at either; stylist Karun Raman suggesting looks; media crew setting up their cameras and designer and the brain behind the store, Shardha Dharmaraj, running around managing the nitty-gritty.
If that was surprising, the fact that all the smartly dressed and confidently posing models are not pros at all. In fact, they are all youngsters from the city who were randomly picked for the Get Spotted contest run by Vulture Creek. The eight finalists picked at various hangouts across the city were chosen to be given a makeover and to be the face of this vibrant store. According to Karun Raman, the youngsters were chosen mainly for their non-model-like appearance.
“We have given them a fun look in keeping with the clothes they are wearing. I feel the clothes at Vulture Creek are more wearable. The laces and lines are so “in”,” he said. What’s Karun’s tip to give oneself a makeover? “Start with the hair and nails.”The “non-model-like” youngsters even confidently posed for the camera like they knew the game. And apparently it wasn’t just me who was surprised by it, even photographer Kunal was. “It’s surprising that they are not conscious at all. I have planned a fun shoot; nothing posey,” he revealed.
Wondering why “fun” is quite often repeated by all? Cos that’s what best describes the collection at Vulture Creek. “The extensive range projects edgy styles and structured fashion in free flowing fabrics, targeting young men and women between the ages of 18 and 30,” is how they describe the collection. “Youngsters these days are extremely conscious about the way they look. They take care of themselves well. And at Vulture Creek we want to give them choices that will complement them and their attitude,” explained Shardha.
While the fabrics range from cotton, georgette, knit and lace, the collection features tops, shorts, camis, dresses, skirts, shirts and t-shirts. Graphic designs and metal rivets are common motifs, besides a little bit of quirkiness. A plain-looking top has slits at the back to help you show off your back. A “just another linen pant” has slits in the side that go up till the thighs. A regular t-shirt is spruced by a unique pocket and collar design. Now, that’s interesting!!
“The entire experience has been fun! And it has been quite a makeover as the casual beach wear that I am wearing now is something that I would never have picked. But now I realise that it actually looks good on me.” – VISHAL REDDY, college student
