The things English can do…
I often pondered over this question especially since English is not our mother tongue — Why should it decide our future? But an incident in my life made me understand the importance of the language.
Life’s lessons
I’m one of those guys who seldom talks to a girl; if I have to I’d probably be facing the ground. I travel to college by train and it was in a railway station that I met her. (“Her” = A girl who made me understand the significance of the language). This girl was my station mate. She studied in a neighbouring college. As the days passed, I saw her often and thought of making friends with her. To me she looked like a north Indian. So finally I mustered courage, walked up to her and asked, “Do you know Tamil?” She replied, “Know”! Or was it, “No!” Being a homophone I’m still unsure of her answer. But I assumed it was “No”. And suddenly I had nothing more to say since I had my own problems with speaking English. And I came back without speaking another word.
Even today I see her but not as often as before since I have shifted my house! It has been almost three years since I first met her; since I first spotted her, rather. And I have spoken to her only thrice. In all those attempts I could barely speak one or two sentences and came back without having a proper conversation. So I still remain anonymous to her! That’s it. So English can not only decide your career or life but it can also decide your life partner!
