On a roll
The book is set in Chennai of the 1970s and has a wonderful dose of laughter on every page. Gopal aka Gopi’s grandfather, Meghmala Radhakrishna, is a renowned poet and song writer and the reason the family moves to Chennai. Gopi’s childhood is far from normal and revolves around his lyricist grandfather, a comic illustrator father, two siblings -the younger Kavi and the elder Lalli - an ardent film buff mother, crazy neighbours and a constant stream of weirdos who come to the city hoping to make it big in the film industry with Meghmala’s help and guidance. Family, neighbours and friends can be best described as close to dysfunctional.
The book is filled with subtle references to Hollywood movies from the 1970s and 1980s. The book has it all from childhood to awkward adolescence growing into adulthood. This is one of those rare books that can be enjoyed best in small doses to pass time and dream of Chennai in the 1970s.
