The Circle of Fire by S.M Hall is the first of a series known as the Maya Brown Missions. It is the tale of an adopted girl, Maya, whose mother is a secret agent. When Maya’s mother is kidnapped, Maya takes it upon herself to rescue her mum. The mysterious Khaled is part of a terrorist gang and seems to be on Maya and her mothers’ side but Maya isn’t sure if he can be trusted.
Though less than 300 pages long, it picks up pace only after a hundred pages but there were some exceptionally high moments. The author’s insights into disguise were ideas I had not considered or heard of before. Omar’s (the villain) story and background are very clichéd and don’t bring add to the plot. Though several people have said they liked the book, it didn’t catch my fancy. I wouldn’t rush to buy the sequel.
