Title: The Drop
Author: Michael Connelly
Price: Rs. 595
Michael Connelly’s The Drop is the 15th novel featuring LAPD detective Harry Bosch. Bosch is reaching the end of a long career so when there is a chance to work on a sex-related murder case sealed two decades ago, Harry jumps at it. When it turns out that the accused Clayton Pell was just eight-years-old when the 19-year-old victim Lily Price was murdered, the plot thickens. If the DNA evidence from another killing wound up in Pell’s file by mistake, Harry would have two mysteries to solve.
Then George Irving, with whom Harry shares a bitter past, checks into a plush hotel and is found dead in the lobby the next morning. His father, a council man, specifically asks for Harry to be put on the case to find out whether his son was murdered or not. A lazy novelist would have manipulated the situation by connecting the two cases. But Connelly’s narrative and attention to detail do not insult the reader’s common sense.
The book races towards a dramatic end. How Harry Bosch overcomes layers of puzzles and deception to finally get his man forms the crux of the story. Though The Drop isn’t as action-packed as many of Connelly’s earlier books, the plot is still rivetting.
