ICONS A trendsetting band that endorses fusion: that’s TaalMatrix for you. RANJITA GANESAN
Many people their age may swear by the gaudy appeal of heavy metal but that doesn’t deter the members of Ruia College’s upcoming Fusion band TaalMatrix. “We make music, not war,” says the jolly 19-year-old drummer, Vaibhav Wavikar.

The band’s unique Hinglish name is a tribute to the genre of music they endorse — Fusion. This six member troupe, which was hurriedly formed just three days prior to the inter-collegiate festival ‘Youth Nexus’, is now making waves. The other members of Taalmatrix are Shreela the vocalist, Rohan on the keyboard, Nitish on percussions and Madhur, the guitarist. Mandar does the vocals and also doubles as the group’s tabla artist.

All six of them had jammed together but it was the fest that brought them together on stage. Here, despite little practice and severe time constraint, they won the first place. Now, they practise when they get time off, mostly in the college premises.

From their music, it’s clear that they were born to perform. The songs they compose are mostly instrumental and have extended solos of each instrument. ‘Yaman’ and ‘Hamsadhwani’ are strongly influenced by Indian classical tunes and Sufi music while ‘Ticotico’ employs traditional Latin elements. At a recent concert, the band even collaborated with Marathi playback singer Nihar Shembekar.

When on stage, they just go with the flow. The band mates are so in sync with each other there is hardly a need to coordinate. That is probably what led jury member RJ Mihir Joshi to compliment them and crown them winners. “I loved your energy and attitude on stage,” he said.

Unruffled in the face of the ever increasing popularity of heavy metal they prefer to be trend-setters. “We create what we like and not what is fashionable,” says the otherwise quiet Madhur. “You won’t be hearing our music in clubs or discos,” agrees Rohan, but adds importantly, “our kind of music has an audience too.”

Their song ‘Hum jeete hain’ is being aired across Mumbai on Radio One. The members of TaalMatrix are toying with the idea of cutting their debut album. Here they intend to use digitalised vocals and electronica. The teens are optimistic about making it big in the music scene.

Vaibhav signs off with a smile, “If Himesh Reshammiya can have a market, why not us?”
