TRANSLATOR Strive hard to master a foreign language not only to score marks but also to fill your wallet. MAANASI RADHAKRISHNAN
As students we have all burned the midnight oil trying to learn German or French in school. Have you ever wondered what use it is for us to learn all these foreign languages? Maybe we ought to think again, because this can be a stepping stone to opportunities in the future. In the long run, knowing more than one language can be a boon in many ways and it will also help you take home a handsome pay cheque by the time you graduate from college. Students who have a flair for languages should invest more time and energy and pursuee it seriously. It can not only prove to be an advantage over others while seeking a job, it is also a great way to earn money while you are still in college — enough to buy that turquoise Hidesign leather bag or that Gucci shades you have been eyeing, and it won’t pinch you dad’s wallet either.
Today many companies are seeking students who are multi-lingual as part time employees. “My company paid in dollars, it many not be much if I was living in Europe or America. However it’s a gold mine when I convert it to Indian currency,” says Sophia, who came from Belgium to study in India. She landed a job on a part-time basis as an English to French translator for an U.K-based company in Chennai drawing up to Rs. 20,000 per month for just four hours of work in a day. Even proficiency in any regional language can land you a job as a translator. Thanks to the internet, people can work from the comfort of their home. Housewives, students, professionals have joined the bandwagon as freelance translators. There are organisations and companies which want official documents to be translated from one regional language to another.
Sayanti De, Visual Communication student and a starter in this field, says earning Rs. 1000 per day is a possibility in translation depending on the number of words one translates. Though translation can be tedious, reference books, dictionaries and the encyclopaedias can help you to deliver quality work. Also, a translation memory software comes in handy while working on larger projects. The material for translations includes technical manuals, business communications and patent documents, gaming instructions, product details, etc, and there are websites online that offer a list of various translation agencies to choose from.
