A winsome piece, a soulful journey

Title: The Last Song

Author: Nicholas Sparks

Seventeen year old Ronnie, short for Veronica, after a lot of protests, agrees to visit her father for summer. Ronnie behaves like any other teenager, rebellious, adamant and stubborn. When her dad walked out on them 3 years ago, she decides never to talk to him again and being the fierce teenager she is, she sticks to her decision. Little does she know what this means and little does she know that her life is going to change forever. Jonah, her 10 year old brother, on the other hand is excited to meet his dad after three years.

Ronnie, arrested twice for shoplifting, scolded by her mother everyday for breaking curfew, is sure that life is going to become more difficult. Once in her dad’s place she goes into a shell, falls into heaps of trouble. Despite all that she is the kind Veronica inside, who loves animals, is a vegetarian and is smart, funny and pretty. This book is about her coming-to-age, her decisions that influence not only her life but also of others around her. This is when she learns trust, love, and responsibility and learns to live again.

Nicholas Sparks with his romantic and mesmerizing style has skillfully woven a daily affair into a heartfelt journey. This book tactfully explores the tacit relationship between a father and a daughter. His uncommon élan and the charming way in which the characters are put forth and the depth and importance of each character only adds more life to this book. A common tale has been graciously woven into a fabulous piece of art. The dialogues are thick with deep meaning in them.

Nicholas Sparks’ uncanny ability to make you smile, cry and emote is truly appreciable. The Last Song is melodious, rocking, not missing a note and truly a masterpiece. It is a flawless piece that can be read by both the old and the young.

As any other Nicholas Sparks novel, it makes you cry, weep and at the same time smile in satisfaction, teaching you yet another way to live life. It is not only inspiring and natural, but it tiptoes to your heart and warms you instantly. If you are in for a sensitive, soulful, realistic and a beguiling journey, this book is a must read; well even otherwise, go for it.
