Have you asked yourself if you had been self-less ever? Then it is about time you did “think big”. Hundreds of young people from Chennai already did! And that augmented into Bhumi, a non-profit organisation that helps children to pursue their dreams. Bhumi got started four years ago with a few students and young professionals. Today, Bhumi has established itself as a front-ranking charity organisation that helps poor children to realise their potential, raise their aspirations and recognize their achievements. Every year Bhumi organises an inter-orphanage Art, Cultural and Science Fest to bring out the children’s creative talents.

The fest aptly named as ‘Siragugal’, reflects their efforts to give wing to children’s dreams. Around 1000 children from 37 children’s homes across Chennai participated in the event held at Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram, Kilpauk on July 11.The Vice-Chancellor of the Anna University Mannar Jawahar inaugurated the event. The children had a good time with celebrities from Kollywood like Actress Anuya and Shiva Karthikeyan of the Kalaka Povadhu Yaaru fame entertaining them. They were grouped according to their ages to take part in various athletic, arts and science events.

Fun-filled evening

The evening had a rush of adrenaline with dance and skit performances from all the homes. They had been judged by prominent people from the society like Sukant Mishra of Kalakshetra who took immense pleasure in judging the children at the pot painting and other art events. Bhumi ensured every kid went home with a gift and a treasure of memories. The valedictory function saw actors Sibiraj and Shiva take part. The children went gaga over the duo and the sprightly singer Maya entertained them with her lively performance. It was an instance of ‘hearing unheard voices’.

The volunteers at Bhumi found the potential in those children and their ideas were blatantly reflected in the creativity and the structured events. Bhumi believes that they play a positive role in society, and aims to challenge negative perceptions about the young destitute children and bring about lasting change. They are the youth of this nation full of ideas and compassion for the poor and unpriviledged. Each one of you with such a passion about society could be a part of Bhumi or you could nominate someone with ideas that deserve recognition. Become a volunteer and help children to live a better life.
